Head Coach Roy Chaney

27+ years of swimming experience!

Coach Chaney has taught swimming since he was a Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) in 1981. He graduated from Harrison High School in 1983 and held the schools 200 Medley Relay Record (Butterfly) and competed in the Everyman’s Triathlon and Mile High Triathlon (Ironman Qualifier) and placed 8th in his age-group. In 1984, he entered into the US Army as a Blackhawk crewchief and mechanic. He competed in several Army sports including soccer, weightlifting and racquetball. In the last year of his Army career, Coach Chaney managed the camps swimming pools and aquatic programs. He became certified as a Red Cross Instructor Trainer in swimming, Lifeguarding, CPR and first aid. He developed the first Camp Humphreys water polo league. In 1987, Coach Chaney returned to Colorado Springs and worked as a lifeguard at the Broadmoor (while attending college for sports medicine). Later that year he was offered a job for the city of Manitou Springs swimming pool as a headguard, coach and swim instructor. After three years, he was offered the Asst. Director job at the Country Club of Colorado. One year later he was promoted to Aquatics Director. Throughout his 16 years at the club, he has developed the Clubs swim lesson program, Jr. lifeguard program, Sailing camp and developed one of the best summer club swim team programs in the city. Currently, Coach Chaney is the Aquatics/Fitness Director at the Manitou Swimming Pool & Fitness Center, Head Coach of the Manitou Springs High School girls swim team, and is Head Coach/Owner of the Colorado Torpedoes Swim Team.

  • High School swimming Head Coach with the Harrison / Sierra High School Boys team - 3 years
  • High School swimming Head Coach with the St. Mary's girls team- 2 years
  • High School swimming Head Coach with the Manitou Springs girls team-2007-2008 season to present
  • Aquatics Director at the Manitou Pool & Fitness Center and certified Swim America Director of the lesson program
  • Total Immersion workshop-Freestyle clinic & coaches clinic
  • American Swimming Coaches Association Level 4 course work
  • American Learn to Swim Teachers Association
  • Colorado High School Athletic Association
  • United States Swimming Registered
  • National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association
  • Member of the Pikes Peak Swim League
  • American Red Cross Instructor Trainer & American Heart Instructor (CPR, AED, first aid, lifeguard, Water Safety)
  • ACE Fitness Trainer Certified
  • Security Volunteer Fire Department and the Colorado Springs Police Reserve Program for 3 years

Paid and Volunteer Coaches

The Torpedoes have other professional coaches join us throughout our season. All coaches receive background checks by the City of Manitou Springs and USA Swimming. They also receive training and certification from the Head Coach in Swim America swim lessons as well as on-deck training and guidance.

 

 Volunteer Student Coaches

We have volunteer coaches working for the team. All coaches will be Swim America and USA Swimming certified and our under the direction and supervision of the head coach or his representive. This program allows us to train future coaches for the sport of swimming.
